Finding your perfect manual home coffee machine can be daunting with so many to choose from. But don't worry, we're here to help! Aside from aesthetics, there are four main distinctions between coffee machines.
Heater Type:
Heat exchangers are the most common in home coffee machines. It refers to a single boiler set to provide steam and water, with a metal tube allowing water to be heated as it is pumped towards the brew group. Single Boiler refers to one boiler which produces steam and water. These machines have a faster heat up time, but require time in between getting an espresso and steaming milk, this is usually about 1 minute. Double Boiler refers to independent boilers for the steam and water, which creates improved consistency and temperature stability. Dual boiler machines allow you to extract coffee and steam milk at the same time.
Pump Type:
Vibration pumps are noisier than Rotary pumps, with testing showing that rotary pumps provide a thicker, more flavourful espresso. Vibration pumps take a little longer to build up pressure in coffee machines.
PID:
PID stands for Proportional Integral Derivative. It's a digital temperature controller on your coffee machine that can determine whether your machine is too hot or cold.
Plumbing:
Some like their coffee machine to refill with water automatically and have their home coffee machine plumbed in. Others prefer the flexibility to simply refill a tank, while easily being able to move the machine around for servicing and maintenance.
